Do It Yourself Home Cleaners

It seems as if you hear about environmental issues every day.  If it is not the cost of fossil fuels and the subsequent havoc they wreak on the environment, then it’s global warming that is being talked about in the media.  It seems like you can purchase almost any item in an organic form today, where as the term organic was virtually unheard of just a decade ago.  Everything from cars to children’s toys can have some sort of environmentally friendly slant or message.

Most people know of the common ways to be more environmentally friendly.  People can do seemingly small things such as using a reusable cup for their morning coffee or a reusable bottle for their water.  A lot of people are also aware of large ways they can have a positive impact on the environment such as purchasing and installing solar panels in their house to provide most or all of the power to their home or purchasing a more fuel efficient car.

There are other less common ways that you can have a positive impact on the environment, one such way being making your own household cleaners.  By keeping a few simple ingredients on hand, you can make a cleaner for almost any cleansing job and this homemade cleaner will not harm the environment and most likely be far less expensive than any chemical cleaner you can purchase.  A few things to keep on hand in order to create your own household cleaners are items you probably already have around anyway such as salt, baking soda, olive oil, and perhaps white vinegar.  You would be surprised at the number of easy and inexpensive cleaners you can make with these simple items.

To make an environmentally friendly furniture polish, simply mix one half of a cup of white vinegar with one teaspoon of olive oil.  The white vinegar acts as a disinfectant and will break up dirt while the olive oil will give your wood a lovely shine.  Use a soft rag to rub this solution onto your furniture for a lovely and earth friendly shine.  You may wish to reduce the amount of olive oil in this mixture if the furniture seems too oily.  Conversely, if the furniture is not getting enough moisture, you can always increase the amount of olive oil.  The ratio of the mixture will depend somewhat on the condition and type of wood you are attempting to polish.

If you have any copper or brass around your home, you probably know that the metal polish you buy at the store can be very caustic.  Thankfully, you can make an inexpensive and environmentally friendly metal polish with just two simple and benign ingredients.  Just mix two table spoons of salt with enough white vinegar to form a paste.  You can add a little flour to this paste to reduce the abrasiveness.  Wipe the paste onto your metal and rub clean with a soft rag.  The vinegar will disinfect and break up dirt while the salt will remove any discoloration from the metal.
