Green Tip: Renew Your Shoes

Monday, June 28, 2010

These days everyone is looking for more ways to be “green” or sustain the earth. We are all concerned about the future of our planet. While recycling and conserving energy are taking precedence, there are always more ways to help prevent waste. Some people have composts in their houses, some have solar panels on their roofs, and others use cloth diapers for their babies. All of these are wonderful ways to take part in sustaining the earth. Admittedly, I am a shopping addict and shoes are my worst indulgence. I like to spend money on good shoes and since I spend so much money on them, I want to keep them looking perfect. When my shoes begin to tear, fade or scuff I am ready for a new pair. Recently, however, I have been feeling a little guilty about tossing out my old shoes. I started donating them to goodwill but I know that if I kept them for a few months longer, I would not only save money but save the materials and carbon footprint it takes to manufacture them. I know I could just suck it up and wear my old, worn out shoes but this is not an option for me.

While trying to justify a new purchase, I came across a website, Nushoe.com, that offers to fix, or “renew” your shoes for a minimal cost. I was intrigued by the idea of saving the environment, saving money, and getting to keep my favorite pair of heels for another season. So I decided to try it. I requested a mailing bag, filled out the form, and sent off my silver strappy heels. The left shoe had a crack in the heel, the right one had a small tear in the strap and both shoes were looking quite dingy. I wasn’t expecting too much from a website that didn’t specialize in my particular brand of shoes, but I figured I was going to give the shoes away anyway so why not give it a shot?

I was very pleasantly surprised when my shoes showed up in my mailbox three weeks later. They literally looked as good as new. Other than the insides looking a tiny bit worn out, the shoes could have sold in the store for full price. I was astounded at the high level of craftsmanship done by the workers at Nushoe. My good experience has provoked me to use this service three more times, saving myself hundreds of dollars and saving four pairs of shoes from entering a landfill. Although Nushoe does use new materials and the process requires shipping both ways, I figure this whole process creates a far smaller carbon footprint than the manufacturing of brand new shoes.

If you are concerned with sustaining the earth, saving money, and keeping your favorite pair of shoes looking good for years to come, you need to check out Nushoe. I have had four excellent experiences with this company and I plan to use them again in the future.
