She Did it Her Way

Monday, June 28, 2010

I recently talked to a single mother who achieved her goals and got a college degree. Her story was one of triumph and overcoming great odds. She had to deal with a job, a family, all of the hard work that goes in to obtaining a college degree and all of the vagaries of life itself. She worked as hard as she could in the day to provide for her family, and as hard as she could at night to excel at school. She proved that the American dream is very real, and that with hard work, perseverance, and dedication, we can all reach our goals.

College has long been a dream for many, but a reality for few. Many people who missed the boat on going to college out of high school think that they are locked out of going to school forever. Our single mother was of this mindset for a long time. After all, how do you attend classes when you have to work and take care of kids? When are you supposed to find the time to go to class? Online college has solved this problem. She was able to sign up for an online degree program through an accredited college and attend class at night. After the dishes were done and the kids were put to bed, she was able to sit down and learn her lessons and write her papers to fulfill her degree requirements.

Cost is another major factor when people are deciding whether or not to go back to college. Yes, college is expensive. Some people get lucky and can find scholarships or employer sponsorship, but the rest of us have to deal with the price on our own. The student loan industry is very good at helping people out. Our single mother was able to fill out the financial aid applications on line and received help from the online college to get everything completed properly. The money went straight to the school and classes were paid for before she started them. She was able to get through without any out of pocket costs. Then, after she graduated, she had a 6-month deferment on her loans so that she had time to put her degree to use before she had to start paying the loans. Without the support from the student loan industry and the college, she never could have realized her dream to go back to school.

Our single mother received a bachelor’s degree online that stood out nicely on her resume. Before that, she had only a high school education and years of experience at menial jobs. With the bachelor’s degree she was quickly able to step into a position that was actually part of a career path, and not just a job. She was able to secure a salary that left disposable income after paying the bills so that she could put money away for retirement and to help the kids pay for college right out of high school. With that advantage, the advantage she never had growing up, her kids are almost guaranteed to have a better life than she had. Isn’t that what we all want for our children?
