Wine Candles – Review

Monday, June 28, 2010

If you are a candle lover and a wine lover you have likely discovered wine themed candles. If you have not, you must get some immediately. The following is a review of several wine themed candles purchased from TheTipsyGrape.com. You can buy similar candles at other websites or stores but I have found this site offers reasonable prices with fast shipping.

Ceramic Wine Bottle Candles. These are not only beautiful but the original idea will wow your friends and family. These candles consist of a long, thick wick with a stopped in the middle. You fill a wine bottle with lamp oil and then insert the stopped into the neck of the bottle, with the wick hanging into the oil. Then light the top of the wick and you have yourself an oil-lit candle with a wine bottle as the lamp. Of course you must exude great caution when using these candles. They provide great light and are a truly original idea. The candles last much longer than a wax candle so it is definitely worth the money.

Full Size Champagne Candles. This candle looks exactly like a real bottle of champagne. It even comes with a gold bow. It is made of wax and burns like a regular candle and since it is so large it lasts for hours. My friends and family thought it was a real bottle from a distance and were very impressed when I lit it. These also come in sets of four mini bottles of champagne if you prefer several smaller candles or in a full size red wine bottle if you prefer that to the champagne. All the bottles are realistic looking and burn well, but I would recommend the larger bottles over the set of mini bottles and the mini ones burn faster and are not as realistic due to their size.

Grape Cluster Candles. These candles are shaped like small clusters of purple grapes and sold in packages of three. These are not quite as “cool” as the other candles as there is no real novelty here but they are affordable and a great gift to add in with another wine related gift or simply with a bottle of wine.

Fleur de Lys Bottle Candelabra. This is not actually a candle, although it does include two tea light candles to use with it. This is a gorgeous candelabra that fits in the top of a wine bottle. The fleur de lys adds some nice décor and the fact that it can be used in a wine bottle makes it easy to use and also adds some flair to the candelabra.

Cork Candles. These are my favorite type of wine related candle. They look exactly like corks but they are made of wax and have a wick. You just pop it in the top of a wine bottle and light the wick. The best part is that any wax that drips will drip onto the bottle which can be thrown out afterwards rather than spending time scraping wax off of a candlestick.

I recently attended a housewarming party, and brought my usual trivet and coaster set as a gift. This is my go-to item when I attend a housewarming, but I have since adopted a new go-to item. A couple at the party brought the new home owners personalized beer mugs that they ordered online. The beer mugs came in a set of four. They had printed “John’s Beer” and “Michelle’s Beer” on two of the glasses and the other two said “for our guest”. I thought this idea was awesome and asked the couple where they bought these mugs. They directed me to a website that sells engraved drinking glasses, called www.glasswithatwist.com . Later that evening I checked out the website and discovered that they don’t only sell beer mugs, they sell beer pitchers, wine glasses, martini glasses, shot glasses, and various other alcohol glasses. The ideas started running through my head wildly. Of course I ordered myself something since I didn’t have any more housewarmings to attend in the near future. I ordered wine glasses for my husband and myself. My husband always tells me I’m “buzzed” when I drink so I printed the word “buzzed” on my glass. The one for my husband said “this poor glass of wine never stood a chance against Ryan”. He thought it was hilarious and agreed that we would now order housewarming gifts from Glass with a Twist.

Finally, nearly six months later, my coworker and good friend bought a condo and decided to throw a housewarming party. The day she told me about it I jumped on the computer and headed over to Glass with a Twist. I had intended on buying her wine glasses but I wanted to try something new so I got some martini glasses. I know she liked to bartend and invent her own drinks so I figured martini glasses could be put to good use. My coworkers name is Eliza so I printed “Eliza’s concoction” on four martini glasses. Each glass had a different saying underneath it. One said “Eliza’s concoction, drink at your own risk”, another said “Eliza’s concoction, good luck”, the third said “Eliza’s concoction, don’t ask what’s in it” and the fourth said “Eliza’s concoction, you’ll never have this same drink again”. She absolutely loved the glasses and later told me her friend thought they were hilarious when she served up her latest “concoction” in them.

I have since ordered some beer pitchers for my cousin who went away for college and printed “official beer pong pitcher” on them. I also ordered a set of wine glasses for my mother in law for her birthday with her and her husband’s names printed around the base of the glasses. I am thoroughly impressed with this website and intend on using it for many gifts in the future. I love that I can choose everything from the font to the actual words and they have such a wide selection of glassware to choose from. The shipping is quick as well and the prices are very reasonable.
