Heating Your Home
With winter fast approaching, many of us are looking for ways to heat our homes without breaking the bank. Each house is different, as is each regional climate, so the right method for you might be different from the method that somebody on the other side of the country could use. Those who live in warmer climes have more options for heating the home, while those in colder climes are limited to systems that will overcome biting cold.
The fireplace is one of the most romantic and desirable tools for heating the home. Many houses come with a built in fireplace. These can be standard fireplaces or those with gas burners. You can burn wood or natural gas, depending on the type. Wood fireplaces have that romantic feel and provide the cracking and popping that people have come to associate with a roaring fire. Gas fireplaces heat more evenly but do not provide the same flame and sounds. For those homes without a built-in fireplace, electric fireplaces are available. These systems can be put in any room in the house and can fit any home decorating scheme. They can be plugged into a standard power outlet and provide controllable heat without the danger of an open flame. The electric fireplaces can be fitted with a custom fake log insert, making it look like a real fireplace.
The furnace is another system for heating the house. Depending on your location, your furnace might run off of electric power, natural gas, or heating oil. The colder areas of the country usually have heating oil systems, as they work the best in severe winter climates. Electric systems work well, heating the entire house thoroughly through the vents, but are very expensive to run. Electricity rates have gone up in the last few years, making winter heating bills very hard to stomach. The heating oil systems are also subject to high prices. Every year some sort of fuel crunch happens where the price of heating oil is driven up for a period of time. Some people combat this by locking in a rate early and paying for the whole season’s oil supply at once. Natural gas systems are relatively cheap to run, when compared to the others. Natural gas prices have risen in recent years, but are still well below electricity and heating oil rates. All three systems provide excellent heat, keeping you comfortable throughout the winter.
For more localized heat, space heaters are the answer. A space heater is a small unit that usually is plugged into a standard wall outlet. It takes electricity in and heats up metal filaments, radiating heat out from its center. The larger the room, the less effective the system. These units vary in price and quality, but can usually be found for a reasonable one-time price that will heat your desired area comfortably.
From fireplaces to furnaces to space heaters, many options exist for heating your home during the frigid winter months. Some heat the entire house better than others, some are less expensive. With a little research and savvy, you can find the right system to suit your needs.
