When He Can’t Run Around

If you are like the rest of us, you love your dog and treat him like a member of the family. You feed him the best food, give him the best toys, and even let him sleep with you at night. When you go somewhere, you probably take him with you because you feel bad for leaving him at home. Sometimes you want to take the dog but you know that you cannot just leave him to run around. He might run away, he might scare somebody, or any other of a number of ways that dogs can get into trouble. What do you do? You will have to find a way to secure him.

Small dogs are the easiest to deal with. For a little guy, like a Chihuahua or a dachshund, you can get a playpen that will hold your pooch in one place and still give him room to move around. Just like a child’s playpen, these devices collapse when not in use and can be set up anywhere. They have sides that the dog can see through and high enough sides to keep the dog from jumping out. Throw in a blanket and a few toys to play with and your dog will be happy and secure for as long as you need. Just be sure to take him out occasionally to relieve himself or you might end up with a mess to clean up.

Sometimes playpens are not practical, but you still need to secure the dog. Leashes work well for this. A leash attached to a collar or a harness and then secured to something that will not move with the dog will keep him in the area. The dog’s range will be very limited, but he will not be able to get away. You will want to make sure that you leave the dog in a shaded area with access to food and water, especially if he is going to be secured for any longer than a few minutes. You will also want to remain close to the dog so you can keep an eye on him to make sure that he does not become tangled in the leash.

If you are going to be indoors, you can probably find a way to secure the dog without having to use accessories. The easiest way is to put the dog into a room and close the door. Some dogs are okay in this situation, others are not. Make sure that there is nothing that the dog can get hold of and destroy. Most dogs like to chew, and if they find something they can get and have an empty room to work on it, you can count on it being damaged. Also make sure that the room is not too hot or too cold, and that the dog has access to food and water.

When you want to take the dog with you but you have to secure him, you have plenty of options for keeping him safely locked up to keep him out of trouble.
